Easy Tips for Concrete Sink Maintenance

Living in a clean environment is essential for good health. Maintaining cleanliness helps prevent the spread of serious diseases. This includes keeping floors, living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and most importantly, sinks tidy.

Failing to maintain your kitchen and bathroom concrete sinks may ruin their appearance. All the dirt will settle on the sinks, making them ugly. Additionally, these sinks become unsafe for use. Untidy bathroom sinks are hosts for approximately 250,000% germs more than your toilet.

Not sure how to keep your concrete sinks looking good as new? Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered with these incredible and easy-to-follow tips.

What Are the Causes of Concrete Sinks Deterioration?

To cure a disease, one must know the cause of the disease. In the same way, to maintain concrete sinks, you need to know what makes them deteriorate in appearance.

One of the causes of this deterioration is dirt, which leads to stains. When sinks are left dirty after use, they form some spots, making the concrete basins unattractive and unsafe. These spots are home to millions of bacteria that lead to unhealthy issues.

Another cause is the presence of pores on the concrete sinks. Due to the porous nature of concrete, the sinks have pores on them despite being waterproof. These pores may enlarge, creating room for other substances and causing stains on the sinks.

You’re now aware of the few causes of the worsening appearance of your sinks. How do you then maintain your sinks to make them appear good as new? Below are a few tips.

Tips for Maintaining Your Concrete Sinks as Good as New

1. Resealing Your Concrete Sinks

What makes the concrete sinks waterproof is the sealant in the concrete. However, this sealant is temporary and, therefore, it may wear out. Weakening of the sealing enlarges the concrete perforations.

Materials like dirt and stains use these openings as a settlement area. As a result, these materials will smear the sink, making its appearance distorting its appearance while creating room for bacteria settlement. Due to the bacteria presence, the sinks become dangerous for use.

For this reason, you should keep your sinks fit to avoid cracks and hole formation that will act as a home for external materials. The reason is that daily use of concrete sinks exposes them to too much water, which weakens the sealing that makes them waterproof.

Therefore, it’s recommended to reapply the sealant after about a year of use to maintain the sink’s integrity. Doing so will prevent the openings from expanding, leaving no room for materials that could stain your sink.

2. Keeping Your Skin Clean Always

One way to maintain the tidiness of your concrete sinks is by thoroughly cleaning them after use. Cleaning them ensures the removal of all dirt and stains on them. As a result, the sinks will appear attractive and safe from any bacteria that may cause diseases.

However, while cleaning your concrete sinks, you need to be careful not to cause any damage to them. How do you then wash your sinks without the danger of damaging them?

Don’t Use Strong Acidic Detergents

Harsh detergents will scrap off the sealants on your concrete sink, making the sink more vulnerable. Due to the porous nature of concrete sinks, the seal makes them waterproof, blocking all water pathways.

Therefore, using hard detergents weakens the seal, making the sink discolored, have watermarks, and stain. Besides being harmful to your sink, these hard cleaners affect the existing water channels and the surroundings.

When they reach water bodies, they cause harm to the water-living organisms killing them. Moreover, you will consume the same poisoned water since your water is the same.

Therefore, avoid strong acid detergents to safeguard the natural resources and your sink.

Avoid the Use of Chemical Products

The concrete used to make the sink is mixed with other materials to seal the poles in the concrete, making it waterproof. Once you have used chemical products while cleaning the sink, the materials acting as a seal become weak. As a result, the holes start expanding, and other foreign materials that stain the sink settle in the pores.

Therefore, use soft materials like clothes to wipe the sink rather than chemical products.

3. Don’t Leave Water on Your Concrete Sink

The sealing in the concrete is not only affected by chemicals but also by exposure to water. Leaving water in the sink for a long time dilutes the sealing, weakening the waterproof function. As a result, the sink starts cracking, creating spaces that accommodate dirt.

The dirt leaves stains on the sink, making it dirty. Therefore, don’t leave any water in the sink.

4. Keep off the Sink From Temperate Water

As discussed earlier, concrete sinks have sealing to make them waterproof. These sealants, however, are vulnerable to warm water. Leaving warm water in the sink for a long time weakens the sealing that prevents the expansion of concrete holes.

As a result, the concrete can’t sustain the forces any longer, making the spaces enlarged and materials to find settlement sites. Therefore, don’t leave boiled water on the concrete sinks to make the seals last longer.

5. Get Rid of the Spots in the Sink

Dirty spots make the sink appear unattractive and unsafe for use. Therefore, it’s necessary to remove them immediately after they start forming. Ethanoic acid works well in removing these spots and is, hence, best for this purpose.

However, for persisting stains, it’s advisable to use sandpaper. The sandpaper will help scrab them completely.

Final Thoughts

You can easily maintain your concrete sink and keep it looking good as new by following the above-mentioned simple tricks.

First, reseal your concrete sink to help make it more waterproof, which will help avoid discoloration. Additionally, wash your sink regularly using chemical-free materials and avoid acidic components.

Furthermore, keep the sink free from water and avoid exposing it to template water. Finally, use a brush to scrub off the persisting spots. Following these tips will help keep your concrete sink in good shape.
