If you live in a small apartment, you probably don’t have room for a six-foot Christmas tree. But that doesn’t mean you can’t deck the halls for Christmas.

Decorating a small apartment for Christmas is possible, as long as you choose appropriately sized decorations. Use your vertical space and decorate your window panes to bring some of the holiday spirit to your living quarters. You can hang twinkling lights from the ceiling, decorate door frames and headboards with festive garlands, style your apartment front door for the holidays, deck out your mantel (if you have one), and even dress up your bookshelves with Yule-themed trinkets and candles. Follow these tips to welcome the Christmas spirit into your small abode.

Downsize Your Decorations

If you want to bring some traditional holiday decor into your living space, but don’t have a lot of room, you’re going to need to downsize your decorations – especially your tree. Chances are you don’t have a disused corner that can accommodate a larger tree, but you can buy a tabletop tree to display on your dining table, coffee table, end table, or even on your mantel or bookcase. Artificial trees are available in a range of sizes to suit every living space. If you want the smell of fresh pine in your home, you can buy a small potted tree.

Use Vertical Space

As a small apartment dweller, you’re probably already well accustomed to using your vertical wall space for storage and decor. If you don’t have a mantel, make a festive Christmas card hanger to display your season’s greetings on the wall. You can also use vertical wall space to display a “tree”. Instead of buying a traditional tree, hang fresh evergreen sprigs from the wall, arranging them in the shape of a tree. There are plenty of wall-hanging Christmas tree ideas that can help you save space without sacrificing a key component of your traditional decor.

Decorate Your Windows

It’s easy to decorate your window panes for the holidays with faux snow and snowflake stickers. You can also arrange candles in the window or arrange fresh pine branches in holiday vases for the windowsill.

Light It Up

How to Decorate a Small Apartment for Christmas

It’s just not Christmas without some twinkling lights. Fortunately, you don’t need to have a giant tree or an outdoor space in order to hang Christmas lights. You can hang them from your ceiling, drape them across your mantel, or arrange them in your windows to bring holiday cheer to your home and neighborhood.

Style Your Front Door

When you’re decorating the inside of your apartment for Christmas, don’t forget to style your front door. Wrap it in holiday gift wrap to look like a present. Hang a wreath and perhaps a stocking from your front door. You can even place small potted trees or poinsettias on either side of your apartment door. The options are limited only by your imagination.

Deck Out Your Mantel

If you have a fireplace in your apartment, don’t miss the opportunity to deck out your mantel for Christmas. You can spruce it up with evergreen branches or a display of small Christmas trinkets. You can string garlands and lights along your mantle. And, of course, don’t forget to hang your stockings by the chimney with care!

Dress Up Your Bookshelves

Bookshelves are perfect for displaying your Christmas knick-knacks. Remove the decorations you display for the rest of the year and replace them with garlands, evergreen branches, and twinkly lights.

Hang Garlands

Garlands can be a versatile and fun way to decorate even the smallest apartment. Wrap garlands around your front door frame to welcome guests into a winter wonderland. Hang them around your interior door frames, too – you can use clothespins to hang your holiday cards from them. Garlands can also wrap around your headboard in the bedroom or around the interior frames of your windows. You can choose tinsel or evergreen garlands, or make your own with popcorn, paper, or cranberries. Homemade garlands can be a lot of fun to make, and can look really stunning.

Final Words

Just because you have a small apartment doesn’t mean you want to live devoid of Christmas cheer for the holidays. It’s easy to decorate a small space for Christmas. Use a small tabletop tree or take advantage of your apartment’s vertical spaces to erect a wall-hanging tree. Decorate your mantle and bookshelves with Christmas trinkets. Frost your window panes and hang Christmas lights from the ceiling. With a little creativity, you can get in the Christmas spirit no matter how small your apartment is.
