Buying a home was a challenging process. But the paperwork is finalized, boxes are moved in, and the house-buying journey is over. Now what?

#1 Set Up Your Utilities

Setting up your utilities is one of the most critical initial tasks for new homeowners. It ensures that your access to electricity, water, gas, and the Internet remains uninterrupted. Here are some tips for setting up utilities in your new home:

  • Have the last utility bill from your previous address and a copy of your lease or mortgage papers to prove that you are the new owner of the house.
  • Learn about the terms and conditions of the utility setup, including the installation charges.
  • Check if there are any outstanding bills tied to your home that must be settled.
  • Prepare to pay any connection fees and bills for the transfer of utilities to your name.

#2 Unpack and Clean

Your first step should be to unpack and clean. Start with the most essential room: the bedroom. Your bedroom is where you recharge your batteries and rest. If you’re working remotely or in a hybrid work situation, you may also want to prioritize setting up your home office. Though with a laptop, you can work from any room.

To sum things up:

  • Unpack items room-by-room to keep track of what needs to be put away and where.
  • Start with the essential items like bedding and clothing first.
  • Use organizers and storage bins to temporarily hold small items per room.
  • Clean as you go to avoid inhaling dust and attracting insects. Of course, the house will need a thorough cleaning after the unpacking process is complete.
  • Now is the time to pick items to donate or discard.

#3 Do Another Inspection

Even if you took every precaution before purchasing your home, you might learn of maintenance concerns after moving in. After settling into your cozy and comfortable surroundings, try these tips to find repair concerns:

  • Look for any signs of water damage or leaking pipes inside and outside of your home.
  • Check your air conditioning and heating systems to ensure they are in good working order.
  • Test out your appliances like the oven, dishwasher, and dryer to avoid unpleasant surprises.
  • Inspect the walls, windows, and ceilings for any cracks and make sure they are properly sealed.
  • Keep an eye out for indications of pests, such as droppings, signs of gnawing and scratching, and nests.

#4 Change the Locks and Alarms

Changing your locks and alarms is an essential step to ensure your family’s safety. It’s likely the previous owners had their own security systems and locks in place, so you don’t want to leave your new home vulnerable to any intruders. Follow these tips:

  • Change the locks on all the entrances, including front and back doors and any windows with locks.
  • Install a new security system. Pick one with motion sensor cameras and door sensors.
  • Change the passwords to any digital locks.

#5 Check the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Many homeowners fail to change the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Some also fail to replace their alarms after expiry. Neglecting to maintain your detectors can result in tragedy. After moving in, please test your detectors. If they seem old, consider replacing them.

#6 Know the Neighborhood

Introduce yourself to your neighbors to start developing relationships. Talk to them about yourself and your family and find out about their background, likes, and interests. You don’t have to be best friends, but getting to know them will help you settle in and learn about the area.

If you were looking to buy a home in Ajax, Ontario, then you probably have some very nice and friendly neighbors.

You can also explore the neighborhood and check out amenities that interest your family. For example, you can visit the local schools, parks, lakes, shops, and other attractions.

#7 Join Organizations

Find out if the neighborhood already has a resident’s association and become a part of it. Joining an association will help you learn about the events and activities in the neighborhood. There also should be other clubs and organizations in the area that can help you and your family socialize and connect with your community. For example, you can find local tennis clubs, chess clubs, charities, or religious or cultural organizations.

As time passes, you will settle more into your home and neighborhood. Take the time to decorate and furnish your dwelling as you and your family like. Go at your own pace to relish the process and develop great memories.

Final Words

Settling into a new home takes time and effort, but it can be an enjoyable experience. Stay organized, open-minded, and appreciate one of the most significant purchases of your life.
